Alberto Gilardino is making Genoa relevant again

Not all athletes are created equal. Especially when they dive into the managers role. Over the years we have seen numerous ex-players try their hat as a manager. Some found instant success i.e., Zinedine Zidane. More so than not, ex-players fail. Enter Alberto Gilardino.

Gilardino embarked on his managerial journey in 2019, and since then he has had the opportunity to work with clubs such as Rezzato, Pro Vercelli, and Sienna. Interestingly enough, his appointment as Genoa's interim manager in December 2022 eventually turned into a permanent position due to his impressive track record and success with the team.

Ever since Gilardino made his triumphant return to the club, Genoa's performance on the field has been nothing short of exceptional. In Serie B last season, managed only six losses in 38 games and during that time, the team had a goal differential of plus 25 and earned an automatic promotion back to Serie A after only one season in the lower league. Their defense was rock-solid with countless clean sheets, while their attacking prowess was evident through their impressive goal tally. It's safe to say that Gilardino's presence has had a significant impact on Genoa's success.

Let's do a deep dive into what Genoa brings to the table, how this style of play got them instant promotion last season, and how that can lead to success this season.

Formations

The image above offers a comprehensive view of the various formations that Genoa utilized throughout the entire season last year. It provides valuable insights into the team's tactical approach and highlights the adaptability of their playing style. It's clear that the Genovese club had previously been accustomed to using two specific formations - 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2.

However, ever since the arrival of the ex-striker, who is a World Cup winner himself, they have strayed away from those formations and adopted new tactics.

Gilardino has shown a preference for various tactical formations. While 4-3-3 has been the most commonly used one last season. This season in Serie A that trend change seems to be a weekly occurrence, though he has mostly favored the 3-5-2 to focus the attack on Mateo Retegui and Albert Gudmundsson. This demonstrates his willingness to adapt and experiment with different strategies to achieve positive outcomes. This shows perhaps the work on the training ground is starting to pay off.

When it comes to their style of play, Genoa were known for their ability to dominate games last season. They had a strategic approach that allowed them to take control and dictate the flow of a match. With their assertive tactics, Genoa consistently aimed to be in charge and leave their opponents struggling to keep up.

Their strategic approach revolved around trapping their opponents deep in their own half by employing patient build-up play, which involved a series of precise short passes. The primary objective was to implement an expansive style of possession, creating width and height on the field. Notably, the wingbacks were positioned high up the pitch to stretch the opposition's defense and maximize attacking opportunities.

As they entered the final third of their games, their play style adapted to the situation at hand. They were not afraid to send crosses into the box, but they also possessed the skill to intricately work the ball into scoring positions through well-executed passing combinations. Their versatility and ability to employ different strategies made them a formidable force on the field.

Instrumental in build-up: midfielders

Genoa's midfielders are essential to their possession-based game, as they play a crucial role in advancing the ball up the pitch. However, their strategic positioning during the possession phases was equally important, as it contributed significantly to the overall shape and success of the team.

When it comes to the talented players in Genoa's midfield, they possessed a remarkable ability to contribute both in deeper areas and as the primary creative force in the final third. In this segment, we will explore how these midfielders typically operated when their team was in possession of the ball.

Take a look at this compelling image that demonstrates how Genoa strategically positioned themselves when in possession of the ball, particularly in wider areas of the pitch. Their tactics showcased their determination to dominate and control the game, ensuring they made the most impactful moves to advance their position on the field.

First and foremost, it's worth highlighting the strategic placement of the wide center backs (highlighted in blue). Their positioning was reminiscent of fullbacks, enabling them to provide crucial assistance to the wingbacks when they were in possession of the ball. Additionally, this positioning afforded them the ability to offer defensive cover in wide areas, ensuring a solid defensive structure for the team as a whole.

The midfielders highlighted in red were crucial to the team's formation in a 3-5-2 shape. Players like Kevin Strootman and Milan Badelj not only supported the team's attacking efforts but also played a defensive role by strategically positioning themselves slightly deeper than the wide center backs. This ensured that they maintained a solid defensive structure and minimized the risk of an opponent's counterattack. Their presence added balance and stability to the team's overall gameplay strategy.

The attacking midfielder displayed strategic positioning by primarily staying in the center until the team progressed to the final third. This approach allowed them to exploit unoccupied areas in the middle and created opportunities to receive the ball effectively.

It's fascinating how Genoa made an unexpected decision in this particular situation. Instead of their usual patient build-up play, they surprised everyone by opting for an early cross from deep. This strategic move showcased their adaptability and willingness to keep opponents on their toes.

Genoa has a clear vision of what they aimed to achieve when in possession, as depicted in the image. Their ability to exploit the opposition's shape and depth became evident, as they were able to navigate the field without facing much pressure from defenders. This strategic advantage granted them ample opportunities to control the ball and dictate the flow of the game.

The players showcased above had a strategic approach to the game. They skillfully positioned themselves to receive the ball, demonstrating their dedication to moving their team forward. However, this was just a glimpse of the brilliance they brought to the pitch. It's a small yet significant detail that added depth to their overall performance.

Albert Gudmundsson, a skilled attacking midfielder, has a remarkable ability to find and exploit open spaces to receive the ball. His talent in this aspect was unrivaled in Serie B and so far this young Serie A season is a shining star.

Not only is the Icelandic winger skilled in his traditional position, but he has also demonstrated his versatility by excelling in a central role. This adds immense value to Genoa, as they have a player who can adapt and thrive in different positions on the field. In the given example, he showcased his awareness by receiving the ball from his wingback and positioning himself closer to the referee than any opposing player. His ability to read the game and make intelligent decisions enhances Genoa's gameplay significantly.

Gudmundsson's exceptional ability to take control of the ball and make quick advances is particularly evident in situations like this one. His instinct to seize the moment and launch a swift, powerful attack sets him apart from others on the field. Even this season we have seen similar attacks that have led to goals by either him or striker Mateo Retegui.

His incredible speed on the field facilitates swift transitions of possession, moving it effortlessly from one area of the pitch to another. This puts immense pressure on the opposing team's defense, making it nearly impossible for them to effectively defend against his lightning-fast moves.

In a breathtaking sprint from his own half, Gudmundsson showcased his exceptional skill as he effortlessly maneuvered through the opposition's defense. With perfect precision and timing, he delivered a masterful pass that effortlessly sliced through the disorganized backline. The ball seamlessly found its way to his teammate up front who confidently buried it into the back of the net, securing a remarkable goal.

Gudmundsson's contribution to the Genoa team cannot be understated. He has proven himself to be an invaluable asset, effortlessly adapting to different positions such as the wing or midfield. His versatility is a key factor in the team's success and has undoubtedly played a pivotal role in their achievements.

With his undeniable attacking prowess, lightning-fast pace, and exceptional footwork, he can truly be a nightmare for opponents on the field. It's worth noting that he had eleven goals and four assists last season and has already netted four goals in all competitions this season through nine games.

Let's explore an interesting strategy employed by midfielders in football. In certain situations, when their team needs to increase the intensity and hunt for a goal, these versatile players often join the attacking unit. An indication of this tactical move can be seen when a defender is on the ball, highlighting Genoa's intentions in this specific scenario.

The width of the team was greatly enhanced by the contributions of both wingbacks. It was actually the right wingback who skillfully received a well-executed lofted pass and scored a crucial late goal. However, credit must also be given to the midfielders, who supported and complemented the strikers in creating a strong presence in the penalty area. Their combined efforts enabled Genoa to effectively occupy and attack from various positions on the field.

Transition game

The intricacies of high pressing and counterpressing are perfectly complemented by attacking transitions and counterattacking. Genoa, last season, truly elevated it to an art form, showcasing their exceptional mastery in these tactical maneuvers.

Once these talented players regained possession of the ball, their instincts kicked in immediately. They had a natural ability to quickly position themselves higher up the field, ready to provide support for their teammates. This allowed them to launch swift and effective attacks, no matter where on the pitch the turnover happened.

This compelling example showcased Genoa's exceptional skill in capitalizing on the disorganized defensive unit of their opponents. They strategically sought to outnumber their adversaries during moments of transition, leveraging this advantage to secure significant gains for themselves.

Gudmundsson is a master at making his presence felt in critical moments, consistently showcasing his ability to lure defenders and open up additional playing opportunities for his teammates. This exceptional skill was perfectly demonstrated in the image above, where he cleverly drew in defenders, creating a dangerous space that his teammates could effortlessly exploit.

With keen anticipation, he patiently observed his surroundings, knowing that one of his teammates would soon appear on his left. Wisely choosing to wait for the opportune moment, he skillfully maneuvered himself to deliver a well-executed pass to his teammate with ease.

This example truly showcased the formidable nature of their transitions, comparable to lions sensing nearby prey. Their relentless pressure on the ball consistently bears fruit, and they pounce with precision once it falls under their command.

Once again, Genoa's attacking strategy excels in making the most of available space in the final third. The team deftly adapted its approach from one attack to another, employing transitional attacks with equal expertise.

Genoa's strategic approach usually involved avoiding lofted balls into the channel. However, in the specific example mentioned, it proved to be the perfect tactic to exploit and outmaneuver their opponent.

The clever move by the striker to gather the ball on the wing not only lured an opposing defender out of position but also created a valuable opportunity for his teammates. By doing so, he eliminated one obstacle in the box and opened up more space for his fellow players to capitalize on when the cross was delivered. This strategic play demonstrated the striker's ability to create advantageous situations for his team.

Pressing and the high line

Teams that display a high level of energy and intensity both when in possession of the ball and off it often share a similar approach. Genoa is no exception, as they have demonstrated their commitment to the defensive aspect of the game. This emphasis on defense has undeniably contributed significantly to their success under Gilardino's leadership.

In critical moments, such as the one portrayed above, they swiftly reacted to regain possession and prevent the opposition from launching a counterattack. This demonstrated the strong commitment of the players to Gilardino's strategic approach. Seeing their dedication in action truly highlighted the effectiveness of his tactics.

The moment the opponent received the ball, he was immediately surrounded and pressured by a Genoa player. In addition, two more Genoa players quickly closed in on his teammate, resulting in a turnover. This strategic pressure not only disrupted their play but also gave their defenders an opportunity to regroup efficiently.

When the opposing team had the ball in their own half, Gilardino's team took an active approach instead of sitting back and passively defending. The attackers would energetically press the nearest player with possession, while nearby midfielders provided support. Additionally, the fullbacks were often seen pushing up to contribute to creating pressure on the opposition. This proactive strategy ensured that Genoa maintained control and disrupted the opponents' gameplay effectively.

An important aspect to consider when implementing these presses is the midfield positioning. It's crucial to be mindful of the open spaces and potential dangers they can create. In this particular situation, the opponent highlighted in yellow had found himself in a dangerous area. Luckily for Genoa, their players on possession did not spot him, but the potential threat was definitely present.

Under the leadership of Alberto Gilardino, Genoa became a force to be reckoned with when it came to their defensive tactics. They exhibited exceptional proficiency in counterpressing, effectively shutting down opposing teams' counterattacks. Furthermore, they demonstrated an impressive ability to recognize pressing triggers and implement appropriate measures accordingly, even during non-counterattacking situations. This strategic approach ensured that Genoa remained a formidable opponent throughout the game.

Conclusion

Thanks to Gilardino's exceptional tactics, his team became virtually unbeatable on their best days last season. They effectively counterpressed, blocking opposition counterattacks while launching deadly counterattacks of their own. Additionally, their midfield unit exhibited clever positional play. The success that Genoa was experiencing under the leadership of this Serie A legend is certainly not a coincidence; it is a testament to the strategic brilliance and smart game plan implemented by Gilardino.

Last year's tactics won't work in the superior Serie A, so Genoa will have to adapt as the season goes on. Early sample sizes this season indicate some of their tactics from last year can work, but they will have to find a good balance to stop goals and score some of their own.

A decent transfer window this summer has helped ease the transition to the top flight. Luckily, they have Gudmundsson and Retegui to thrash the opposition's defenses this year. All indications are that Gilardino is someone who can adapt and this Genoa squad should be able to navigate safety at the end of the season.
